Discover Lili Sushi & Ramen

Walking into Lili Sushi & Ramen feels like that moment when you’re starving, it’s cold outside, and you just know you picked the right place. I first stopped by on a rainy weekday evening after a long drive through Carol Stream, and within minutes, the smell of simmering broth and freshly cooked rice did its job. This spot sits at 161 S Schmale Rd, Carol Stream, IL 60188, United States, and it’s one of those local restaurants that quietly earns repeat visits without trying too hard.

The menu strikes a comfortable balance between Japanese comfort food and crowd-pleasing favorites. Ramen bowls are clearly the backbone here, and you can tell the kitchen takes them seriously. I watched the staff prep tonkotsu broth early in the afternoon during a previous visit, and that slow simmering process matters. According to culinary research shared by the Japanese Ramen Association, traditional pork-based broths often require 12 to 18 hours to reach proper depth and emulsification, which explains why the broth here tastes rich without feeling heavy. One spoonful in, and you get layers of umami that linger just long enough to make you go back for more.

Sushi lovers aren’t left out either. The rolls are clean, balanced, and clearly made to order. I usually test a sushi restaurant with a simple salmon avocado roll, and the fish here passed easily-fresh texture, mild sweetness, no fishy aftertaste. On another visit, I tried their specialty roll recommended by the server, and it delivered that freshly sliced fish experience people often mention in reviews. It’s not experimental sushi, but it’s consistent, which matters more than flashy plating.

What really stands out is how approachable everything feels. The staff doesn’t rush you, even during busy dinner hours, and they’re happy to explain differences between broths or suggest pairings. That kind of service lines up with hospitality research from Cornell University, which shows diners are more likely to return when staff demonstrate menu knowledge and personal engagement. It shows here, especially for guests who might be new to ramen or sushi.

Reviews from regulars often mention portion size, and they’re not exaggerating. Ramen bowls come out steaming and generously filled, making them ideal for sharing or taking home leftovers. I’ve personally tested that theory more than once, and the noodles hold up surprisingly well after reheating. One limitation worth noting is that peak hours can get busy, and wait times may stretch slightly on weekends. Still, the turnover is steady, and the experience rarely feels chaotic.

The location itself makes this diner-style restaurant easy to fit into everyday plans. Whether you’re grabbing lunch between errands or meeting friends for a casual dinner, the parking and accessibility help reduce friction. That convenience plays a role in why so many local food blogs and neighborhood reviewers label it a reliable neighborhood favorite rather than a special-occasion-only spot.

From a broader perspective, Japanese cuisine continues to grow in popularity across the U.S. Data from the National Restaurant Association shows that ramen has consistently ranked among the top trending menu items in recent years, driven by its versatility and comfort appeal. Places like this contribute to that trend by keeping flavors authentic while staying welcoming to all palates.

If you’re someone who checks reviews before choosing where to eat, most feedback highlights consistency, cleanliness, and friendly service. Those are hard-earned traits in the restaurant world, especially for establishments juggling both sushi and ramen. While no restaurant is perfect, the steady quality here explains why locals keep coming back and recommending it without hesitation.

  • I went here on a date with my fiancé and we ordered the Spicy chicken ramen, pork ramen, crab Rangoon, and the fried gyoza. All the food we had was very fresh and delicious. The crab Rangoon has nice sweetness to it compared to other saltier ones. The gyoza has a nice crunch to it as well. The ramen is very good with the broth being perfect as well as the spicy broth which had a nice balance of spice to it. Overall I recommend this place!!!

  • I've been here twice so far and the food is excellent. The sushi is fresh and well portioned. Mochi ice cream is elegantly presented on the plate. This time, I had their miso tonkatsu ramen with pork and it was very good. The noodles were cooked perfectly, pork was tender and flavorful, and the soup base was piping hot. None of the ingredients were overly seasoned or salted. It was perfect for a cold autumn night. The service could be worked on a little more since there was only one waitress. I was standing around for about five minutes before I was seated and there was minimal communication about when my food was coming or if it was being made at all. Atmosphere and vibe are spot on for a Japanese place. Seating is limited and there's not much space to walk around. It's a small place but I definitely recommend it if you're looking for sushi or ramen in the area. The prices are decent but albeit on the pricey side.

  • This was a new experience for us! We enjoyed our food-one order miso ramen, one shrimp teriyaki, and one white Sox and one avocado mango sushi. We all loved our Thai tea, too. Great service.

  • Another great visit to Lili Sushi with my family. We absolutely love the ambience and service here plus the amazing quality of the fish and beautiful presentation. I love that they are always trying something new and letting the guests know about it, giving great information like flavor profile and presentation description. Vicki is such a sweetheart, we love dining here. Try the new sushi sandwich and fatty toro if you are in soon. The new sake flight was quite tasty as well, I would not have tried those varieties of sake if the flight was not available. The coconut sake was delicious, I would definitely order again after a meal.

  • This place is my favorite sushi spot in the area! Not only is the quality of the food amazing but the owners are great people also ! I go there atleast once a week or more. It’s a little small inside but ambiance is perfect. I really love their rainbow nurato dish, very light and refreshing, the shashimi is SO fresh and great portion size, rolls never fail and fresh and the ramen is also top on my list. The menu is full of amazing options that I continue to try. This is my hidden gem!

  • Excellent stop for lunch. A small restaurant with large flavor. Pricing is great. Sushi options for the sushi lovers and ramen and udon dish options for the others. Their rice dishes will also not disappoint. The spicy shrimp and avacado roll was well prepared. Quickly followed by the pork belly rice bowl. Well cooked and it came quick to the table. All washed down with a Thai tea. Will definitely be returning next time I’m through Carol Stream.

  • Ordered the Spicy Seafood Ramen—overall was fine for the most part; the seafood amount matched the image on the menu, however, it had one singular sliver of squid. You can taste the leftover starch on the noodles, which wasn’t pleasant as it slightly coats the tongue. Besides that, I enjoyed the mussels, clams, and the broth. Service was great and I enjoyed the music in the background. As seen in the image, the California roll lacked in the amount of imitation crab and was primarily just avocado.

  • First time trying this place and it turned out to be a neat little spot. Not too much space for dining in but they make the most out it. The sushi was super fresh.. that’s was the most enjoyable part. You can tell the fish is fresh and the sushi was made to order. I got the Alaskan and Boston rolls I believe.. both were great. With an unsweetened iced tea that was also freshly brewed.. I’m talking tea that’s better than Texas Road House. I was very impressed with this spot and feel that it reflected the 4.7 stars it has, which is why I chose to eat here in the first place. They got 5 stars out me, thanks for the delicious quick bite. Oh and they also were playing a nice music playlist which was a great touch. You can hear it in the video.
